Lecture 14 - Jet Fuel Flashcards
What is the effect of oxygen content on jet fuel
higher oxygen lowers energy density - means more fuel must be carried increasing dead weight
Why must jet fuel operate at a range of temperatures
Passes through wing - gets extremely cold - cant freeze
Goes through electronics and hydraulics - used as coolant - gets very hot
Cant degrade as heat management system
What is the flash point of jet fuel
38 C - wont burn under normal conditions
Why are the combustion characteristics of jet fuel very important
as turbine blades are very sensitive - fuel cant have contaminates in that damage them
Why are fuel and additives specification very closely controlled
As fuel has 30 year lifespan - parts are standardised to be used with approved fuels - outside of this specification could lead to significant issues
What is there a large percentage of aromatics in jet fuel
Even though they produce more smoke it improves the energy density and helps elastomer seals swell to properly seal
What are incidental materials
contaminates but cant call that as makes it sound like they got there by accident and the fuel is not being properly controlled
Why are additives disapproved of by industry
additives are used to compensate for issues with fuel, makes it look like youve made the fuel badly
Why is it difficult to create new jet fuels
25 Tests for small changes to already spec fuel, 200 tests for completely new on and if you want to adjust you have to redo tests completely
Why is microbio added to fuel
have water at bottom of tank causes spores to form which damage system and get in fuel - need m
What is special about jet fuel
its a high performance premium product
Are there contaminates in jet fuel
yes it is easily contaminated from a number of sources
What is being looked at in fuel approval process
helping people through get new fuels through test process
Fast track for certain fuels
What is the issue for using alternative fuels in jet engines
spec assumes that the fuel is made in the standard method which is not always the case for new fuels
