Lecture 13 Flashcards
Object recognition
Accomplished by an emotional component.
Capgras syndrome/delusion
A person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, pet, etc. has been replaced by an imposter/copy.
- There is conscious recognition but not automatic emotional reaction.
Prosopagnosia
There is no conscious recognition of faces, whereas the automatic physiological reaction is preserved.
Instinct (motivation)
Inherited and innate tendency to fulfil a goal.
- Behaviourists do not like this concept.
Drive (motivation)
A behaviourist term referring to the internal state that is generated by suboptimal physiological response.
- Homeostatic tendency of a system to take action in order to keep itself in a certain state.
Arousal (motivation)
The amount of energy/stress needed to complete a task.
- Arousal can be mental, emotional, or physical.
The Yerkes-Dodson law
There is an optimal state of arousal corresponding to a particular task.
Need (motivation)
A more physiological concept in which it is generally assumed that ‘lower needs need to be satisfied first’
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Bottom to top
Basic needs:
1. Physiological
2. Safety
Psychological needs
3. Belongingness and love
4. Esteem
Self-fulfilment needs
5. Self actualisation.
Intrinsic motivation
Action is in itself rewarding
Extrinsic motivation
The action itself is not rewarding, but it leads to a reward.
