lecture 13 Flashcards
sedentary living
inactive lifestyle which leads to higher health risks
metabolic flexibility
the ability to switch between substrates
the second law of fuel metabolism
the brain must be continuously supplied with glucose
liver
maintains blood glucose levels. first stores glucose in the form of glycogen
what happens if glucose levels fall too low
glycogenesis- the liver breaks down the glycogen it stores and releases it in the bloodstream
gluconeogenesis
the liver converts amino acids to glucose
insulin
hormone release by beta cells in the pancreas
role of insulin
to lower blood sugar promoting glycogenesis only
glucagon
secreted by alpha cells in the pancreas when blood sugar is low
epinephrine
stimulated by excercise or stress and promotes glucagon secretion
cortisol
stimulated by stress and increases substrates in the body
what is the downside to constant stressor
there is a constant oversupply of fuel in the bloodstream leading to metabolic dysregulation
