Lecture 12 Immune System Flashcards
Certain diseases block lymphatic circulation and trap lymph in tissues resulting in localized swelling
lymphedema
Innate immunity
Adaptive immunity
B lymphocytes are responsible for —— immunity
humoral (antibody)
T lymphocytes are responsible for _________immunity (need activation by APC)
cell- mediated
B (lymphocytes) cells mature in
bone marrow
T (lymphocytes) cells mature in
thymus
Secondary lymphoid organs
Sites of B & T cell activation
Diffuse lymphoid tissues, tonsils, lymph nodes, spleen
Bone Marrow
look for megakarocytes(Yellow)
Hemopoietic cells and sinusodial cap
ancer of red marrow. Normal blood cell counts are reduced resulting in fatigue, easy bruising, and increased risk of infections.
Leukemia
absent or hypoplastic thymus results in T cell immunodeficiency with increased risk of recurrent infections and autoimmune reactions.
(e.g., in DiGeorge Syndrome)
Thymic medulla
Cortext and medulla
Site of T lymp activation
Thymic(hassall’s) Corpuscles
Only in the thymic medulla, epthielia cells arranged in a layers.
HIGH MAG
White
Yellow
Blue
White: Thymocytes(small nuclei)
Yellow: Epithelial Cells(Euchromatic nuc)
Blue: Macrophages used to phagocytose rejected thymocytes.
