What does the endocrine system do?
Secretes hormones
List the pure endocrine organs and the organs
havine a large proportion of endocrine cells.
Pure endocrine organs:
- Pituitary
- Pineal
- Thryoid and parathryoid
- Adrenal glands
Largly endocrine organs:
- Pancreas
- Thymus
- Gonads
- Hypothalamus
Where is the pineal gland located?
Posterior to the thalamus
Where is the pancreas located?
Inferior and posterior to the somach
In the pancreas, name the cells types and what hormones they make
Alpha cells: glucogon
Beta cells: insulin
Where is the thymus located?
Medial to the lungs
What does cholesterol do?
Provides provide cell membrane structure
What is a hormone?
Something that is synthesized in one part of the body but used in another part of the body
What does hormones and cholesterol have in common?
The chemical structure is similar
What are two effects of sterioid useage?
- Cause mood swing
- Cause testicular artophy
How does the pill work?
The pill changes a women’s menstrul cycle such that her body beleives she is pregnant, so ovulation does not happen.
