Lecture 12: Case 1: what pings where Flashcards
What are the common diseases seen in dairy cattle post freshening
- Mastitis
- Ketosis
- Hypocalcemia (milk fever)
- Displaced abomasum (eating less, rumen smaller abomasum has room to move)
What makes a ping sound
Gas and fluid interface
What pings on the left side
Rumen, displaced abomasum, uterus
What pings on the right side
Uterus, small intestine, cecum, spiral colon, and displaced abomasum
What does an increase PCV/TP indicate
Dehydration
what does this blood gas tell you
Hypochloremic, hypokalemia metabolic alkalosis, azotemia
How can hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis with hyponatremia be related to GI problem
Sequester Cl- rich fluid in GI therefore not in bloodstream
Which GI organ produces a large amount of Cl-
Abomasum
Patient with right sided abdominal distention, hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis, dehydration and hyporexia. What is a likely differential
Right sided abomasum displacement +/- volvulus
How do you address and right sided abomasum displacement
- Surgery- determine if abomasum is intact, confirm if there is a volvulus or not, deflate abomasum and push back down, suture momentum to body wall
- Give fluids
