Lecture 11 Flashcards
Density dependent factors
Become more important as the population size increases
What are the 2 main types of growth limits?
Density dependent and density independent factors
Density independent factors
Affect the population size regardless of density
Carrying capacity
The maximum number of individuals of a species that can be supported by the available resources in a particular environment
Inflection point
The point of fastest growth after which growth begins to slow
What happens if a population exceeds its carrying capacity? i.e., overshoot
- A decrease in birth rates
- An increase in death rates
- Or both
Allee effect
Positive density dependence; the growth or survival of a population increases as the population density increases
Reasons Allee effect occurs:
- Finding mates
- Cooperative behaviours
- Predator satiation
- Resource availability
What does logistic equation model?
- Density dependent population growth
- Commonly negative density dependence
- S-shaped curve
