Lecture 10 Flashcards
What is degradation?
The process of chemically breaking down materials results in changes to their physical properties. This process can occur over days or years
What can cause degradation in biomaterials?
For biomaterials that could be due to the environment or
direct action of living organisms
What is uncontrolled degradation?
Usually undesirable, structural
breakdown, materials failure
What is an example of controlled degradation?
Drug delivery tissue engineering
What is corrosion?
Degradation of metals and ceramics due to environmental factors.
What is polymer degradation?
Breakdown of polymers through various chemical processes.
What is galvanic corrosion?
Corrosion occurring between two different metals.
What is pitting corrosion?
Localized corrosion forming small pits on metal surfaces.
What is chain scission?
Polymer degradation through breaking of molecular chains.
What is hydrolysis?
Chemical reaction involving water causing material breakdown.
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons leading to material degradation.
What is enzyme catalyzed degradartion?
Breakdown of materials facilitated by biological enzymes.
What is stress-cracking?
Cracking in polymers due to mechanical stress.
What is ROS (radical oxygen species)?
Reactive molecules causing oxidative degradation.
What is the Nernst equation?
Equation relating half-cell potentials in electrochemistry.
