LECTURE 1: INTRODUCTION Flashcards
Why do we talk about music so much in the module?
1) Great example to highlight what’s occurring in the contempt creative economy
2) whereas book publishing has only been dealing with e-books, ipads and book streaming for a few years the music industry faced the digital crisis in 1999 and this means that many of the other creative industries are either following in the footsteps of music or learning from its mistakes
3) Music resonates with students because almost everybody listens to music and engages with it on some level
Problem of ease of accessibility and value
Tech makes it easier and more accessible to blurring line between producer and consumer = more choice and many platforms for distribution BUT value of this skill/process/time/effort etc it takes to make a creative product may be limited or destroyed
Problem with eroding value and increased accessibility is… (2)
…how do you convince someone to pay for music/film etc when u can download it for free?
- Or even ENGAGE with it in the first place?
Why are curators becoming increasingly important?
To help to sort and evaluate products and providing consumers with general or customised recommendations
A lot of this module focuses on research in geography focus on producers, people or firms that make things, this module takes a more BALANCED approach by looking at…
…consumers and intermediaries (e.g. curation)
Geographers are really good at looking at the relationships between activities and places, but sometimes we need to… (+ qu)
step back and think about the linkages between places
–> How do they interact and influence each other and how does information and knowledge flow across space??
