Lecture 1 : Human Tissue Act (2008) and Types of Tissue. Flashcards
Learning Objectives : 1. Understand and Describe the Human Tissue Act 2.Describe the four basic types of tissue – what is similar and what is different.
What is the Human Tissue Act?
This act governs the usage of human tissue for scientific research. For it to be eligibal there must be dual consent from the donor and the donors family. Most body parts are only held for 18 months but can be held for longer for teaching.
Can convicted criminals or unclaimed bodies be used under the Human Tissue Act?
No, the human tissue act prohibits the use of human tissue under those circumstances.
How can the human tissue act be broken?
If the donor or donors family decide they no longer want the human tissue to be used. This can be done at anytime. Remember, there must be dual consent so if one decides against it then that is final.
What are the four types of human tissue?
Epithelial, Connective, Nervous and Muscle.
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue is the tissue that connects, binds and supports other tissues and gives structure to the human body. Such as bones, blood cells, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.
What is epithelial tissue?
Epithelial tissue is the tissue that lines surfaces of the body, cavities and hollow organs.
What is muscle tissue?
Muscle tissue is tissue that can contract forcefully. Such as skeletal muscle which can contract for movement. There are three different types of muscle tissue. Smooth, Cardiac, Skeletal.
What is nervous tissue?
Nervous tissue is the tissue that is specialized to carry information or instructions from one place to another. This is carried out through electrical signals and chemical synapses.
