Lecture 1- Biology & Learning Flashcards
Sequence the process of memory formation
Stimulus -> sensory memory storage -> encodes into short-term (working) memory -> encodes into long-term memory
What happens if a memory is not encoded?
The memory is forgotten
What is long-term potentiation?
Strengthening of synapses based on patterns of activity
How does the use of memory facilitate long-term potentiation?
Long-term memory -> retrieval -> short-term memory -> re-encode into long-term memory -> stimulates long-term potentiation (LTP)
What is neuroplasticity?
The ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization
How are memory and learning different from each other?
Learning is the use of memories to reduce the probability of a negative outcome
