What is organisational behaviour?
A field of research that studies how individuals, groups and structures affect organisations, with the aim of improving organisational behaviour
How is OB important in projects?
-Predict behaviour
-Develop yourself and others
-Improve the quality of the work and the projects
What are examples of challenges in project management?
-Identify good fit between personality and task
-Can a personality be changed for the better
-Manage group conflict
When is leadership needed?
Whenever people work together
In psychology, how is the effectiveness of leadership measured?
The degree to which the mind/psyche of others can be affected
What are the two terms used to talk about leadership effectiveness?
-Intention fit, did the change move in the intended direction?
-Effect size, what is the magnitude of the change?
Why is who is a leader a poorly formulated question?
It confuses leadership outcome with who does the leading
What personal factors drive leadership initiatives?
Competence, motivation, confidence
What social dynamics affect leadership initiative?
-Roles and responsibilities
-Norms
-Psychological safety
-Support and respect
What is important to remember about organisational hierarchies when it comes to leadership?
They are also social networks where leadership can be bottom-up and lateral. Everyone can influence everyone.
What is the result of management without leadership?
-Not advancing your own priorities
-Not acquiring valuable experience
-Slower promotions
How should you navigate negative and positive influences on your team as a leader?
Removing negative influences is twice as effective as trying to compensate by adding positive influences
