What is identity? and what are the different types
-you have multiple identities for example religion, gender, ethnic background, student, you are someone’s family member your power, money and social status
who are indigenous people?
- those who’s ancestors had lived in areas of earth before the age of colonialism
- shared culture, language, history, and religion/spirituality, and religious practices
- they strive to maintain a distinct way of life (the way they dress, communicate, cultivate the land, thinking and acting
- may have several labels (first nations, native americans, indians, aboriginals
what are the 2 aspects of identity? and what is an example?
Personal and Group Identity (ex: someone’s identity as metis is both personal and group)
what are the 2 factors of personal and group identity?
- biological, cultural, linguistic, religious, economic and political factors as a whole shape personal and group identity
- blood quantum is used to say what belongs to whom (as in land) which goes up to 6 generations
what 3 injustices did the Canadian colonizers commit against aboriginal people in canada?
- they seized their empty land
- the indian act was created and they controlled and constrained indigenous peoples relationship to the land
- assimilation of residential schools
what injustices did the british colonizers do to the indigenous people in film #2?
- placed direct violence on them because they were forced out
- assimilation
- murdered and raped them
social construction of the aboriginal peoples in canada?
- substance abuse
- welfare dependency
- laziness or lack of work ethic
what are/were the consequences of the examples of social construction for the indigenous people?
-creating poverty
- destruction of culture and tradition
- destruction of wildlife and biodiversity
- introducing foreign diseases

what is direct violence? and an example?
- a physical connection
- ex: displacement or taking land from people
what is structural violence and give an example?
- policies that are implemented
- or consequences on certain groups of people
- ex: residential schools, christian missionaries
