What are the 3 reasons as to why canada receives immigrants?
1) Economic- labour industries
2) Humanitarian- something happens outside of canada so we accept refugees b/c they have no home
3) Political reasons- in other countries, the gov’t is not stable resulting in violence, lack of basic rights etc. So canada lets immigrants in b/c they have applied for political asylum
what are the 5 major immigrant categories in canada?
- Refugees
- Economic Immigrant
- Family class
- Temporary foreign workers
- Non-status immigrants
why were the europeans favoured as immigrants by the canadian gov’t?
B/c it was perceived that they were able to better assimilate to the canadian cultures and values than non-euorpeans
what factors acted behind choosing non-white immigrants?
- the non-white immigrants/temporary workers were permitted to migrate into canada as the canadian employers needed cheap labour
- however the workers were not welcomed as permanent citizens
What is the Negro Problem?
- Black people could not live in the same neighbourhood as the white people
- Preventing african americans from moving to canada
What influenced in changing the post- WWII immigration policy of canada?
- the post WWII international political environment played a role in tempering officially sanctioned discrimination w/in the immigration system.
- Government policies that were grounded on explicitly racist assumptions about the inferiority of groups of people were discredited both politically and scientifically
