- The governments legal policy, law or system of segregation and/or discrimination based on race/ethnicity

A
- Inhumane acts, systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over another
- causes significant violations of human rights: social, cultural, political, and economic rights

- it was created b/w 1948 and 1994 which legally separated people from the designated race/ethnicities in every aspect of human life
- it ended in 1994, and everyone in south africa was granted the right to vote

What was the apartheid like in south africa?
A
- peoples from different races and ethnicities were separated form each otherw/ different rights and obligations for each group
- Hospitals, schools, beaches, restrooms, theatres, and sports fields were designated mostly for whites but occasionally for people of colour
- only whites could run for office and vote
- forbid extramarital interracial sex as well as intermarriage

How is the south african apartheid different from the Jim Crow laws?
A
South african segregation:
- it has categories based on physical appearance: black, white, coloured and indian
- people of colour were th majority while only 13% of the pop. were white
The Jim Crow segregation:
- was based on the “one drop rule” which designated anyone w/ any “negro blood” as a negro
- white people in the US dominated numerically over ppl of colour
