lec 7- population dynamics cont. Flashcards
what model is used when a population is growing unchecked?
density-independent model
what are the two types of density independent models?
-geometric (discrete time points in a population vs time graph)
-exponential (time is continuous in a population vs time graph)
how is geometric growth calculated?
Nt+1 = Nt lambda
lambda = rate of geometric population
how is exponential growth calculated?
rate of change of population/ time = rN
r = rate of growth per individual
or Nt = N0e^rt
what is formula for r?
r = ln (lambda)
what limits population growth?
density dependent (species limit each other over) = food/prey, water, shelter, disease, mates
density independent
density independent = weather and climate
what is carrying capacity?
max number of individuals that can be supported in environment
how is logistic population growth calculated?
change in population over time = K/(1 + ((K - N)/N) x e^rt)
