lec 6- population dynamics Flashcards
what is replacement rate?
one offspring to replace parent, results in a relatively stable population
what is an example of rapid population growth?
humans, rabbits
what are examples of population decline?
endangered species
what is a cohort life table?
a life table that follows one group from birth until the last one dies, their lifetime
what do life tables do?
describe overall growth of a population
what is a static life table?
estimate survival and reproduction rates in a specific year
what is X, nx, lx, sx, and bx in a life table?
x = age
nx = number alive
lx = number of survivors
sx = survival rate
bx = fecundity, number of offspring
what is net reproductive rate?
R0 = number of offspring produced by average individual over her lifetime
R0 = sigma factor multiplied by lx bx
what causes changes in population growth rate?
age structure
what is G?
generation time
G = (sigma factor multiplied by age multiplied by lx bx)/ R0
what is ra?
exponential growth rate of population
ra = ln(R0)/ G
what does r>0, r=0, and r<0 mean?
population growing, stable, declining
