lec 3- study design Flashcards
what is a hypothesis?
proposed explanation for an observed phenomenon
what is a proximate hypothesis?
cause of immediate changes in individual phenotype or interactions
what is ultimate hypothesis?
address the fitness costs and benefits of a response
what are the types of ecological studies?
experimental (strong), comparative (weak), retrospective (medium), and modelling (weak, easy and fast)
what do experimental studies require?
involve treatments and controls, multiple replicates, requires randomization
what do error bars represent on a graph?
show variability
what experimental study is common for immobile objects/ individuals?
factorial (punnet squares etc.)
why is random sampling essential?
because only a select amount of individuals/sites can be measured, so randomness is required for accurate variation
what is a retrospective study?
analysis over time, used to understand temporal dynamics
