lec 5- populations Flashcards
what constitutes a population?
interbreeding individuals of a species, some distinctions between a population
how does population vary in space?
it varies by distribution and dispersion
distribution: what shapes species/ population boundaries?
historical filter = where taxa evolve
physical filter = habitat requirements, environmental limits
biological filter = other species like predators, prey etc.
dispersion: what are types of dispersion of a population of organism?
clumped together = driven by predators, and resources that are clumped
uniform = territoriality, strict competition
random = most common, patchy resources, predators, unpredictable disturbances
what is the formula for mark and recapture
N = M/r
N = estimated number of population
M = marked
r = (proportion of recaptured in a sample, marked in sample/ sample)
what is the point of mark and recapture?
To estimate a population that is hard to count individually
