Lec 7-1 Flashcards
Gene transcription is going from
DNA to RNA
RNA vs DNA differences
RNA contains a ribose sugar rather than a deoxyribose sugar
2’ carbon of sugar has a hydroxyl group in RNA which makes it more unstable
RNA can take on
Many secondary structures (ie hairpin)
RNA can act like
Proteins
Flexible secondary shape allow some RNA to act as ribozymes
Ribozymes
Cut/edit out own sequence
Connect RNA molecules together
Replicate other RNA
Catalyze peptide bonds formation between amino acids
Theory of RNA
RNA was the original genetic material on the planet 4 billion years ago (Only RNA and ribozymes)
Transcription requires 3 major components
A DNA template
Raw materials needed to build a new RNA molecule
The transcription apparatus, consisting of the proteins necessary for catalyzing the synthesis of RNA
Raw materials needed to build a new RNA molecule
ribonucleotide triphosphates- rNTPs
