Intellectual Property (IP)
Products and processes created by a person’s or group’s intellectually creative efforts
IP Law
an entire field of law devoted to the protection of property rights of one’s intellectual creativity
IP Categories
Copyright, Trade-mark, Industrial design, Trade secrets, Patents
Copyright
Deals with any authored original work but
not the ideas or concepts covered in them
Trademark
Distinct words or symbols used to represent the source of goods and services
Trade secret
Information that is not made available, i.e., is a secret, is protected from improper discovery by confidentiality
Industrial design
The use of distinct product features having any combination of patterns, shapes, configurations, etc., can also be protected under IP law
Patents
grant inventors the right to exclude others from making, using, and selling their inventions
What can be patented?
Patentable inventions include any of:
Product
Composition
Machine
Process
Any improvement on one of the above inventions
Patent criteria
Novelty, usefulness, proof of inventive ingenuity
General procedure for filing a patent
Preliminary current and pending patent search, Filing a provisional application (optional), Drafting of patent application, Filing of patent, Request examination of patent application
