Lec 21 Flashcards
What is galvanic vestibular stimulation
- can activate vestibular system artificially trough electric current.
- electrodes placed over mastoid process
Why use Galvanic vestibular stimulation
because it can tell you when ppl rely on vestibular system. They will move differently and or have impaired movement that you can observe.
Describe the set up for GSV
You have anode and cathode side. one placed over each mastoid process.
The anode side gives decreased firing of vest syst and the cathode side gives increased firing.
in anatomical position, you lean towards anode side. When looking down (now in transverse plane) you turn towards anode side.
If only have one anode and cathode, I guess you can only make someone lean/turn one way without switching the anode/cathode.
Does body position give you different effects when using GVS
what research prove this?
How was this graphed/drawn
No, when move just head, you tilt perpendicular to head. When move head with entire body, you still tilt perpendicular to head.
Body position not matter
if graphed, will see positive linear line with head position on x-axis and sway direction on y-axis
given the effects of GVS, what part of the vestibular system does it stimulate (maybe not on exam)
Utricle, because detects horizontal movement and would cause swaying, then when tilt head down, it still follows the utricle.
