Lec 13 Flashcards
difference b/t Kinesthesis and Proprioception
proprio = unconscious perception of body position, includes reflexes
Kinesth = conscious perception of limb movement including tesnion/force, effort, heaviness and posture (not reflexes)
Name the sources of kinesthesis and proprioception and what each does
Muscle spindles - velocity and length of muscle
GTO’s - force generated, and tension resulting at tendon
Skin receptors - length, velocity, joint angle, accelleration via skin stretch and length
Joint receptors - pressure in joint capsule, pressure due to contraction, joint movement
Evidence of importance of sensory input in movement and control. (Hint: Waterman, GL, animal studies)
Animal studies - cut dorsal roots (rhizotomy) = afferent info not come in. Impairs movement and balance.
GL and Waterman - must look at their limbs to move accurately. De-afferented.
Therefore afferent info is important
do muscles spindles play a role in kinesthesis, what experiment shows this?
Yes help with sense of joint position. Experiment where vibrate muscle spindles, give illusion of joint movement and position change. Vibrated muscle perceived as longer. Faster vibration = longer and faster movement. Pinnochio effect.
Can make ppl think their nose grows by stim bicep while holding nose.
What would you feel from muscle spindles if your tendon was pulled, but there was no movement at the joint
You would feel like your muscle is lengthening
