Lec 1 Brain & Circulation Flashcards
Pre-central gyrus is the primary _____ cortex.
Motor
Post-central gyrus is the primary _____ cortex.
Sensory
Gray matter represents
high densities of cell bodies
White matter represents
Myelinated axon tracts
Flow of CSF
Lateral ventricle -> foramen of Monro -> 3rd ventricle -> cerebral aqueduct -> 4th ventricle -> apertures (1 med, 2 lat) -> subarachnoid space
Functions of CSF
bathes & protects brain
provides buoyancy, prevents compression of cranial nerves
CSF is produced where?
choroid plexus
What cells produce CSF?
ependymal
Hydrocephaly - what is it?
Blockage of ventricular system = increased intracranial pressure.
Impaired circulation of CSF.
Usually from congenital aqueductal stenosis.
Hydrocephaly Tx
Ventricular shunt, drains CSF into peritoneal cavity.
Doesn’t reverse damage, only prevents further damage.
