Learning Theory Flashcards
Who came up with the behavioural learning theory?
Dollard and Miller 1950s
What is attachment?
Attachment is an emotional two way bond that develops over time between the child and it’s main care giver
How does the behavioural learning theory view attachment?
It sees attachment as being learnt behaviour through two types of conditioning (operant conditioning and classical conditioning)
What is operant conditioning?
Learning through reinforcement- behaviour that is rewarded or has a pleasurable outcome is more likely to be repeated
In operant conditioning what is the primary motivating force?
Food
After the baby is fed it feels pleasure and is more likely to repeat this behaviour. What is the pleasure from feeding known as?
Primary reinforcer
What is classical conditioning?
Learning through association
When forming attachments how is classical conditioning used?
The baby learns that the mother and food come as a pair and associates the mother with the pleasure that comes from being fed
What an unconditioned stimulus? And what is it in terms of forming an attachment?
Food, because it isn’t trained to feel pleasure from the food
What an unconditioned response? And what is it in terms of forming an attachment?
The untrained response made to the unconditioned stimulus in this case it would be the pleasure it feels
What an conditioned stimulus? And what is it in terms of forming an attachment?
The mother as the baby is trained to feel pleasure from the mother
What an conditioned response? And what is it in terms of forming an attachment?
After the mother has been paired with the food enough times the baby just feels pleasure from the mother. The response to the conditioned stimulus
After classical conditioning what is the secondary reinforcer?
The mother
After classical conditioning what has the baby developed for the mother?
A secondary dependency drive
