Learning & memory Flashcards
Classical conditioning
Pavlov believed it was the result of a strengthens connection between two brain areas ( one that represented CS and one that represented UCS activity
Operant conditioning
REINFORCEMENT - Any event that increases the future probability of the response
Positive vs. Negative Reinforcement
a stimulus can be added (positive punishment) or removed (negative punishment).
PUNISHMENT - Any event that decreases the future probability of the response
engram
the physical representation of a memory
Equipotentiality
all parts of the brain contribute equallly
Mass action
the cortex works as a whole
Lateral interpositus nucleus
cerebellum) - see changes in activity during learning. Lesion causes a permanent loss of conditioned response. Temporary lesions (by cooling or by drug) blocked learning. Lesions in motor area (red nucleus) blocked responses, but not learning.
SHORT-TERM MEMORY
for events that have just occurred. Only a limited amount of information (7+2 items) held for a brief period of time (<60 sec)
LONG-TERM MEMORY
permanent storage of information from previous times.
