chemical senses Flashcards
Taste
the stimulation of taste buds.
the taste buds are located in papillae on the surface of the tongue
sweet, sour, salty, and bitter are the “primary” tastes
5th taste receptor- detects the taste of glutamate–“umami”
Nucleus of the Tractus Solitarius (NTS)
taste nerves projects to this structure in the medulla
Olfaction
receptors are olfactory cells that line the olfactory epithelium in the rear of the nasal air passages. these receptors are replaced every 30 days or so–only sensory system that does not go through the thalamus first
Anosmia
lack of smell
vomeronasal sensation
receptors specilized to respond to pheromones
vomeronasal organ is a set of receptor near the olfactory rector
not well in human
synesthesia
the experience of one sense in response to stimulation of a different sense.
sensory infor may be sent to more than one cortex.
