Hindbrain Flashcards
Rhombencephalon
Medulla
Pons
Crebellum
Medulla Oblongata
controls vital reflexes: including bathing, heart rate, vomiting, salivation, coughing, and sneezing–through the cranial nerves. Large does of opiates are life-threatening because they suppress activity of the medulla.
Pons
Lies anterior and ventral to the medulla.
Axons from each half of the brain cross to the opposite side of the spinal cord so that the left hemisphere controls the muscles of the right side if the body and the right hemisphere controls the left side.
Cerebellum
Control of movement
balance and coordination
People with damage to the cerebellum have trouble shifting their attention back and forth between auditory and visual stimuli. They have difficulty with timing, such as judging whether one rhythm is faster than another.
The Cranial Nerves

I. Olfactory
Smell
II. Optic
Vision
III. Oculomotor
Control of eye movements; pupil constriction
IV. Trochlear
Control of eye movement
V. Trigeminal
Skin sensation from most of the face; control of jaw muscles for chewing an swallowing.
VI. Abducens
Control of eye movement
VII. Facial
Taste from the anterior two thirds of the tongue; control of facial expressions, crying, salivation, dilation of the head’s blood vessels.
VIII. Sratoacoustic
Hearing; Equilibrium
IX. glossopharyngeal
taste and other sensation from throat and posterior third of the tongue; control of swallowing, salivation, throat movement during speech.
X. Vagus
Sensation from neck and thorax, esophagus, and larynx; parasympathetic nerves to stomach, intestines, and other organs.
