Learning Intention 4 Flashcards
to know: - how to identify the parts of a neuron - how to identify the different types of neurons - how to describe the process of sending messages between the neurons and the synapse
1
Q
What is a neuron
A
a special body cell that can send and receive messages. A bundle of neurons makes up a nerve
2
Q
What kind of signals are produced by a neuron
A
- inside neuron: electrical
- outside neuron: chemical
3
Q
Parts of a neuron
A
- dendrites (attached to cell body)
- cell body ( surrounds the nucleus)
- nucleus (control centre of the neuron)
- axon (stem coated in myelin)
- axon terminals (attached to axon at the bottom)
4
Q
What is the synaptic cleft
A
gap ebtween neurons
5
Q
process of sending messages between neurons across the synapse
A
- an electrical signal travels down a neuron to the axon terminal
- neurotransmitters are released into the synapse
- they cross the gap and attach to the next neuron, passing the message
- the second neuron responds and the message keeps moving
- the chemicals used are either recycled or broken down
