Learning Intention 12 Flashcards
To know how to describe the body's three lines of defense to protect against pathogens
What are the lines of defence
- barrier defenses (physical and chemical barriers)
- non-specific defense
- specific internal defence
Examples of physical lines of defense
- skin
- cilia
- endothelia
Examples of chemical barriers of defense
- hydrochloric acid
- enzymes in tears and saliva
- mucus
Examples of non-specific defense
- phagocytes
- neutrophils
- macrophages
- inflammation
Examples of specific internal defense
- lymphocytes (T and B cells)
What are phagocytes
a type of white blood cells that digests any pathogens that enter the body
What are neutrophils
white blood cells that fight infection
What are macrophages
a large white blood cells that eat pathogens, dead cells and debris
What is inflammation
the body’s natural response to injuries or infections
Signs of inflammation
- redness
-swelling - pain
- heat
What are B cells
lymphocytes that produce antibodies that lock into pathogens to immobilise them, for phagocytes to then detroy them
What are T cells
lymphocytes that burst open infected and abnormal body cells by ‘docking’ with antigens
