Learning Intention 2 Flashcards
To understand how to relate the properties of different types of radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum to their uses in veryday life and communication technology
Electromagnetic spectrum
- radio waves
- microwaves
- infrared
- visible light
- ultraviolet
- x-rays
- gamma rays
Characteristics of radio waves
long wavelength, low frequency and used in communication technologies like radios and televisions
Characterisitics of microwaves
shorter than radiowaves, used in microwave ovens, satellites, mobile phone communications, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi
Characteristics of infrared light
lower frequency and lower energy than visible light, and is used in remote controls, thermal imaging cameras, transmitting info between computers or mobile phones and keeps the Earth at a comfortable temperature due to greenhouse gas
What is visible light
the only part of the spectrum visible to the human eye. Colours are produced by light waves of different frequencies and wavelengths, and white light is a combination of the whole EMR spectrum. Red has the longest wavelength and the lowest frequency.
What is visible light used in
everything from vision and photgraphy
Characteristics of ultraviolet
short wavelengths, high frequencies and high energy. used for sterilisation, tanning beds and is important for the production of Vitamin D. It also causes sunburns
Characteristics of X-rays
high energy, used in medical imaging to view inside the body
Characteristcs of gamma rays
shortest wavelength and the highest frequency used in cancer treatment emmitted by nuclear reactions
