Learning Intention 13 Flashcards
To know: - how vaccinations work - how to understand the effect of vaccinations on individuals and society
What is an antigen
any substance that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against it
What is an antibody
a protein component of the immune system that ciculatges in the blood, recognises bacteria and viruses and neutralises them
Why can the AB blood group receive blood from any donor
they lack anti-A and anti-B antibodies, allowing them to accept all blood types without an immune reaction
What happens when a person with A-type blood that produces anti-B antibodies in their blood serum receives blood that contains B antigens
blood clotting
What is a vaccine
a weakened version of a disease that is injected into the body in order to produce antibodies against it
How do vaccines work
- the vaccine enters the body and tiggers an immune system response
- white blood cells produce anti-bodies to attack the microbe
- the microbe has been made harmless
- the body now has defenses against the microbe
- if a microbe then attacks the body, the memory cells produce anti-bodies to attack and destroy it quickly
