What is the difference between a learning disability and difficulty?
Learning difficulty:
Any learning or emotional problem that affects, or substantially affects, a person’s ability to learn, get along with others and follow convention.
Learning disability: A significant, lifelong condition that starts before adulthood, affects development and leads to help being required to: Understand information Learn skills Cope independently
What are the three main symptoms of autism?
deficits in communication and social interaction, impaired imagination and poor range of activites
What is the management for ASD
OT and SALT
Early intensive behavioural intervention to improve IQ
Risperidone for aggression, melatonin for sleep and SSRIs for repetitive behaviour

What are the three main symptoms of ADHD?
Inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity
What is the management for ADHD?
Try behavioural management first
Check for hearing problems
Methylphenidate aka Ritalin is first line
Atomoxetine
What are common co-morbidities with learning disabilites?
Epilepsy- can be hard to tell if they’ve got it unless it is full blown tonic clinic
Metabolic and heart disease
Anxiety and depression
Dementia
What are causes of LD?
Problems at birth such as toxiplasma and rubella infections.
Genetics such as fragile X syndrome, down’s syndrome and edwards syndrome.
