Learning and Memory Flashcards
Habituation
the process of becoming used to a stimulus
Dishabituation
occurs when a second stimulus intervenes, causing a resensitization to the original stimulus
Observational Learning
the acquisition of behaviour by watching others
Associative Learning
pairing together stimuli and responses, or behaviours and consequences
Classical Conditioning
a form of associative learning in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with and unconditioned stimulus such that the neutral stimulus alone produces the same response as the unconditioned stimulus; the neutral stimulus thus becomes a conditioned stimulus
Operant Conditioning
a form of associative learning in which the frequency of behaviour is modified using reinforcement (increases behaviour) or punishment (decreases behaviour)
Pathway of memory formation
sensory memory - short term memory - working memory - long term memory
Explicit Memory
Conscious and includes declarative memory (facts and events)
Implicit Memory
Unconscious and includes procedural memory (skills and tasks)
Declarative Memory
includes episodic memory (events/experiences) and semantic memory (facts/concepts)
Procedural Memory
Skills and tasks
Episodic Memory
Events and experiences
Semantic Memory
Facts and concepts
Encoding
the process of putting new information into memory
Facts are stored via
Semantic networks
