Learning Flashcards
What is habituation?
Habituation is defined as the decrease in a behavioural response that occurs during repeated presentation of a stimulus
What is sensitisation?
Sensitisation is defined as the enhancement of a reflex response by the introduction of a strong or noxious stimulus
What did Thorndike postulate?
Learning in animals is due to trial and error rather than insight
What is the difference between classical condition and operant learning?
Operant learning can generate new behavioural patterns, classical conditioning just changes the conditions under which reflexes occur
What is reinforcement?
Anything which increases the likelihood of a behaviour being repeated
What is positive reinforcement?
Anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of a behaviour by using pleasant consequences
What is negative reinforcement?
Anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of a behaviour by using consequences that are pleasant when they stop
What is punishment?
Anything which has the effect of decreasing the likelihood of a behaviour by using consequences that are unpleasant when they happen
What is continuous reinforcement?
The desired behaviour is reinforced every time it occurs
What is partial reinforcement?
The desired behaviour is reinforced only part of the time
