League of Nations VS Depression Flashcards
What was the Great Depression?
Losing countries had to pay huge reparations and industries over the world lost a market for trade (war).
1929 - A financial crisis, the Wall Street Crash, hit America. Businesses and banks went broke and bankrupt.
1933 - Around 15 million Americans were homeless and unemployed. This meant that countries couldn’t trade with America.
Countries owed each other money.
What were the consequences?
People lost faith in their governments and turned to extremists - they believed they were strong and could help them recover. Such as Hitler and Mussolini. To fight them, the LON would need an army - they didn’t have one. So, the members would need to use theirs. However, the countries didn’t want the expense during the Depression.
Why were extremists a bad idea?
They were likely to cause conflict because they were very nationalistic and distracted people from big problems.
