What is the difference between hard skills and soft skills?
-Soft skills are known as people/interpersonal skills.
- (communication, leadership, motivation)
- Hard skills are known as teachable abilities - to gain a skill
- (Foreign languages, qualifications)
What is the difference between co-ordination and managing?
Co-ordination is to arrange in a proper order
Managing is to exercise control
What is the difference between management and leadership?
Management - The role of management is to control a group or group of individuals in order to achieve a specified objective.
Leadership - Is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the organization’s success.
What management styles are you aware of?
Laise-faire - Hands off - allow the group to make the decisions.
Democratic - Superiors welcome feedback of subordinates
Autocratic - the firm but fair manager. Gives employees direction.
What are some key characteristics of a successful leader?
- Team building and promoting teamwork
- Good listener
- Sets positive examples
- Fosters creativity and innovation
- Integrity and trustworthy
What does a successful project manager need?
- Strong balanced leadership
- Broad knowledge through experience
- Able to motivate and inspire
- Truthful and transparent
What are the steps you would take to solve a problem on a project?
1 - Identify the problem
2 - Analyse the problem
3 - Describe the problem
4 - Look for a root cause
5 - Develop alternative solutions
6 - Implement a solution
7 - measure the results
What is a RACI chart?
It is a simple matrix used to assign roles and responsibilities for each task, milestone or decision on a project.
What does RACI stand for?
Responsibility, Accountability, Consulted, Informed
How do you deal with an under-performing team member?
- Address the matter in a private setting;
- Understand any underlying issues/blockers
- Set clear measurable targets
- Review improvement over time
- If issue is not resolved, escalte
- If after weeks of trying to support, the issue persists, I would consider replacing the individual.
What is Hertzberg’s theory on motivation?
Hertzberg identified that certain characteristics of a job are consistently related to job satisfaction and job dis-satisfaction. These are
- Motivating factors (these have the ability to motivate staff - recognition, reward, advancement, empowerment)
- Hygiene factors (these have the ability to make staff unhappy - salary, safety, security, working conditions)
What is McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y?
Theory X - you believe that your team dislikes work and they have little motivation. This means that you micromanage peoples work to ensure they get the job done properly.
Theory Y - You believe that people take pride in tehri work and see it as a challenge and you trust them to do their work.
How would you manage a Theory X person?
Provide a series of structured tasks and monitor the execution
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of need?
Is a motivational theory comprising of a 5-tier model of human need. It shows basic needs, psychological needs and self-fulfilment.
Does an employer owe a duty of case to an employee?
It is the employer’s job to protect the health and safety and welfare of their employees and other people who are affected by their business.
Employers need to:
- Provide health and safety training
Manage and address grievances promptly and effectively
- Provide adequate equipment to complete a task
- Protect staff from discrimination
