Construction Technology Flashcards
What is the sub-structure of a building?
- Lower portion of the building (in the ground)
- Includes foundations, basements and retaining walls
What is ground heave?
Where clay soil swells when wet and causes an upward movemet of the ground.
What is the purpose of a foundation?
To provide support for structutres - transferring the load to the ground.
What do you take into consideration when selecting foundations?
- Load of the building
- Type of Structure
- Cost
- Construction Constraints (buildings in proximity)
What are the different types of foundation?
Strip - a strip of linear structure, helps spread the weight across the ground. Used to support masonry (most common).
Raft - Used where the stress below the ground is reduced (water)
Pad - A square usually used to support a column.
Piled -
What fire provisions might you find in a new building?
- Fire alarms
- Sprinklers
- Fire dampers
- Smoke control alarms
- Evacuation plan
- Fire exits
- Maximum occupancy.
What is fire compartmentation?
They compartment the fires by shutting doors etc to help limit the spread of fire or smoke.
What is intumescent paint?
It protects any surface that it is applied to.
It minimises fire damage to the structure.
How are sprinklers activated
By either heat or smoke.
What is the difference between single phase and 3 phase supply?
Single - Uses 1 live wire
3 Phase - uses 3 live wires
3 phases provides a more reliable, constant current.
Why do we install generators?
To act as a secondary supply should the primary power fail?
What does HVAC standfor?
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
What does FCU, AHU and VAV stand for?
FCU - Fan Coil Unit,
AHU - Air Handling Unit,
VAV - Variable Air Volume System
What is a UPS?
An uninterruptable power supply.
Used for life critical systems, data centres and IT servers.
What is an air source heat pump?
Takes the heat from the ground or air and then boosts it to a higher temperature using a compressor and then transfers the heat to the heating system.
