What is a leader?
Someone who can influence others who may or may not possess managerial authority
What are trait theories?
Leaders are born and cannot be trained.
What are behavioural theories?
Leaders are not born, there are behaviours that can be trained which differentiation effective from ineffective leaders
What are the four main studies?
The University of Iowa studies (democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire)
The Ohio State studies (consideration v initiating studies)
The University of Michigan studies (employee orientated v production orientated)
The Managerial Grid (concern for people v concern for production)
What do the contingency theories of leadership require?
Effective leadership requires the ability to adapt to the situational circumstances
What is the Fielder Contingency Model?
A leader’s style of interacting with his/her employees and the degree to which the situation allows the leader to control
What is the Hersey Situational Leadership Role?
That successful leadership is achieved by selecting the right style for the followers’ readiness based on employee ability, willingness and confidence
What are the four Team Leader roles?
Coach, Liaison with External Constituencies, Conflict Manager and Troubleshooter
What are the seven traits that make you a born leader?
Drive, desire to lead, honesty and integrity, self confidence, intelligence, job-relevant knowledge, extraversion
