Leadership In Theory Flashcards
4 types (not only Ines) of leadership
Trait theory
Behaviour
Contingency
Transformational and charismatic theories
Trait theory
Leaders are born not made
Focus is on the leader not the job
Leaders have common characteristics
Emphasis on leadership selection
Critique :
People like to see leaders as gifted
Traits have some association with leadership
Useful during recruitment and selection
But:
No consensus on traits
Traits become predestined
Limits the idea of leadership training
Gender bias “great man theory “
Behaviour theory
Ohio state study- initiating and considerate structure
Leadership styles :
The way back which the functions of leadership are carried out, the way in which the manager behaves towards members of the group (Mullins, 2013)
Autocratic
Democratic
Aliases faire
Critique
Useful perspective for development
People can change and grow
People and results form core leadership process
But:
No universal behaviours identified (is high high best )
Ignores the situation
Some behaviours more suited to some situations
Contingency theory
Measure the leader(motivation priority (task vs relationships)
Measure the situation (Staff relations;need for rules ; and control)
Match the leader and situation (to ensure a good fit)
Critique:
Tends to be supported by some research
Implicitly promotes authenticity
Organisational portfolio planning
But:
Limited understanding of “why” some leadership approaches match situations
Problematic during times of change
Transformational and charismatic theory
Transformational ( -“4 I’s”- idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualised consideration
Charismatic() - vision and articulation, persona risk, sensitivity to follower needs, unconventional behaviour
Critique:
Intensively researched
Emphasises” followers”- need and growth
Complementary to other leadership models
But:
Ambiguity over “behaviours or traits”
Elitist in outlook
Can persuade followers to adopt destructive path or be blind to dangers
