Leadership in sport pt2 Flashcards
What are the theories of leadership?
- Trait theory
- Social learning theory
- Interactionist theory
Explain the trait theory
- Leaders are born with their leadership qualities
2. These traits are stable and enduring and can be generalised across different situations
Evaluate the trait theory
- Popular belief that ‘great leaders are born not made’, leaders have characteristics which make them effective
- People in sport tend to be quite specific in their leadership skills, which works against the generalised trait approach
Explain the social learning theory
- Leadership characteristics can be learned from others
2. Behaviour of others is watched and copied, vicarious learning
Evaluate the social learning theory
This theory shows the importance of social environment for adopting leadership qualities, rather than the trait approach which does not take the environment into account
Explain the interactionist theory
An individual may have certain in-born traits, such as assertiveness, but they are not evident unless a situation demands the leadership behaviour
Evaluate the interactionist theory
This theory accounts for the fact that people may not be leaders in everyday life but show leadership qualities in sports situations
What are the 7 parts of Chelladurai’s model?
- Situational characteristics
- Leader characteristics
- Member characteristics
- Required behaviour
- Actual behaviour
- Preferred behaviour
- Performance and satisfaction
Explain situational, leader and member characteristics
- Situational characteristics are environmental conditions
E.g. number of people in the group, activity, etc. - Leader characteristics are the personality/skill level/experience of leader
- Member characteristics are the skill level/attitudes/personality of the members
Explain required, actual and preferred behaviour
- Required behaviour is when the situation dictates the appropriate style of leadership
- Actual behaviour is the behaviour the leader displays as a result of the situation, the member characteristics and the leader characteristics
- Preferred behaviour is when member characteristics dictate the appropriate style of leadership
Explain performance and satisfaction
Performance and satisfaction is the overall performance of the members and the leader and the level of satisfaction
