Differences between a manager and a leader
Managers:
-Responsible for setting objectives,
-organizing resources and motivating staff .
-coordinating day-to-day tasks and monitoring how well objectives are being achieved.
Leaders: (same as managers and…)
-they must identify the problem and have the vision to suggest radical solutions.
-they have to be good motivating others.
-Leaders are good communicators and often creative and innovative.
Leadership styles
(Autocratic leadership)
The manager sets objectives and tasks. Instructions are obeyed.
Adv:
-A quick work
-Complete control of work
-good for unskilled workers
Disadv:
-Little motivation
-Bad for learning
-High levels of supervision
Paternalistic leadership
Similar to autocratic leadership, but paternalistic leaders are interested on workers well being.
Democratic leadership
Encourages involvement in decision making
-Persuasive: when the leader has already made a decision, but takes time to persuade workers. It’s a good idea.
-Consultative: is when the leader consults others about their views before taking a decision.
Why is it good?
-Workers can feel more motivated as they can take part in decision making
-People have different ideas and consulting them can lead to taking a better decision.
-Increased standards mean that people expect more freedom.
Why not?
-decisions take longer to be made.
-Ideas may be explained unclearly
Laissez-faire
The leader leaves freedom when making decisions.
Good for:
-highly skilled workers
-Experienced workers
-Motivating workers
Bad for:
-unexperienced or unskilled workers
-unmotivated workers
Moving from entrepreneur to a leader
When a business grows there are going to be changes. And the entrepreneur has to change to a leader.
-The need for formality: small business can be run on an informal basis. As everyone works close to each other decisions are quick. But with 100 of workers communication is more complex. (Need formal communication)
-Need for shared ownership: as a business grow the need capital for expansion. So they may need another owner.
-greater responsibility to others: as there are more workers, more people rely on you. You also have the responsibility to please stakeholders.
-The need for strategy and vision: when the business grows the owners becomes more concerned in the future of the business.
Difficulties in developing from an entrepreneur to a leader
-Changing mindset: entrepreneurs want autonomy and control. But leaders can’t do everything themselves.
-Stress: as the business grows the responsibility is greater, so stress increases.
-Sharing ownership and control: some entrepreneurs might find it difficult to loose some control of the business they have created.
-Trust: Some entrepreneurs may no trust new people entering the business.
-Lack of leadership qualities: Some entrepreneurs may lack of qualities like communication, problem solving, decision making or organization.
Overcoming difficulties
Methods to adapt and overcome difficulties:
-Delegation and trust: Delegation of tasks to experts is going to improve performance in the business. So a successful leader should trust them.
-Earn respect: many difficulties can be avoided with respect of stakeholders.
-Maturity and experience: time and learning from mistakes may help you in being a good leader.
-Education: Some difficulties can be avoided by going to specialized courses.
-Reduce stress: Calm leaders are more likely to take correct decisions and be successful.
