Who is Minos father and who does he marry?
Song of Zeus and marries Pasiphae (daughter of Helios, sun god)
How does Minos claim the throne when the king of Crete dies?
says gods favor him and he can prove it, prays to Poseidon to send a bull from the sea and promises to sacrifice it
What does Minos do once the bull is sent?
doesn’t sacrifice it, Poseidon grows angry
Who is Daedalus?
renowned Athenian architect (taught by Athena)
Who does Daedalus throw off a roof? Why?
Nephew Perdix because he was jealous of him inventing the saw
What does the angry Poseidon do to punish Minos?
causes Pasiphae (Minos’ wife) to lust after a bull
What does Pasiphae do with this new found lust?
enlists Daedalus to help her…
Daedalus builds Pasiphae a hollow cow
What does Pasiphae give birth to?
a minotaur
What does Daedalus construct? Why?
constructs a labyrinth to enclose the minotaur
What is the connection between this bull and Heracles?
same bull –> also the Cretan bull that Heracles has to capture during his 7th labor, releases it in Marathon
Who does king Aegeus stay with after getting answers from Delphi at the Oracle?
Pittheus, who understand oracle
What does Pittheus do?
gets Aegeus drunk and puts him in bed with daughter Aithra –> gets pregnant
What does Aegeus tell Aithra to do?
raise their child and that he will hide his sword and sandals under huge rock and when the boy is old enough to bring them to Aegeus to assume the throne
