Who delivers the infant Dionysos to “what” in Nysa?
Hermes delivers Dionysos to the nymphs in Nysa
Nymphs
- kind semi-divine nature spirits
- looks like mortal women
- reside in trees, rivers, forests, mountains, etc.
What does Dionysos do?
wanders through the east in disguise, converting cities to his worship –> gain recognition of himself as a new god (also to vindicate his mother)
Where does Dionysos arrive after his wanderings?
Thebes, home of his mother’s family
Who is spreading a rumor? What is it?
Agave (Semele’s sister) - that Semele was killed by Zeus for lying about being his lover
Who doesn’t believe Dionysos is a god?
Pentheus, new king of Thebes (cousin of Dionysos)
Who believes Dionysos?
women of Thebes, including Agave (Pentheus’ mother) - all become maenads and left the city
What does Dionysos makes Pentheus do?
makes him admit he wants to see what the maenads in the wilderness are doing… has him dress up as a maenad and Dionysos leads him to them
What do the maenads do to Pentheus?
tear him apart
Agave puts Pentheus’ head on her…

Dionysos offers what, as a god?
joy and ecstasy –> for those who follow/accept him
terror and madness –> those who don’t
Demeter
goddess of grain/agriculture
Who are the parents of Demeter?
Cronos and Rheia (one of the first original 6 Olympians)
Who is the daughter of Demeter? By whom?
Persephone (by Zeus): a fertility goddess
Hades
ruler of the dead
kingdom is the underworld
“lord of many guests”
grim/serious, not evil
Who does Hades fall in love with? Who does he ask for help?
Persephone
-goes to Zeus for help who tells him to abduct Persephone (his daughter) and bring her to the underworld
What does Demeter do after Persephone is abducted?
wanders the earth for 9 days with a torch in hand
Who heard Persephone cry out?
Hecate: goddess who controls the dark powers of earth/the underworld
Who do Demeter and Hecate go to? What does he say?
Helios - saw abduction, explains and says that Zeus approved
What does Demeter do after she finds out the news about Zeus?
feels betrayed –> shuns company of gods and walks earth in disguise (woman named “Deo”)
What does Demeter do in Eleusis?
meets daughters of King Celeos and Qeen Metaneiro
- tells them made up story
- begins work in their home as a nurse to newborn son Demophon
