Q

What is the Survey Area?

A

Surveillance area (SA). The area in the operational environment that a unit/MTG/ATG can detect a vessel of possible military concern. The SA is a function of Combat System Sensor capabilities, external assets, and the vessel parameters (RCS, emitter state, velocity)

Q

What is CIEA

A

Classification, identification, and engagement area (CIEA). The area within the SA and surrounding the VA(s) in which all contacts must be classified, identified, and monitored. The goal is not to destroy all contacts in the CIEA, but rather to make decisions about necessary action to control the risk that the contact poses. The CIEA is a function of friendly assets/capabilities, reaction time, threat speed, PWO/CO’s decision time, and the size of the VA.

Q

What is the vital area

A

Vital area (VA). The VA is the area to be defended, which typically extends from the centre of a defined High Value Unit (HVU) to a distance greater than the expected threat’s weapons release range. The intent of the VA is to engage legitimate threats prior to them entering the VA. The VA is a function of the anticipated threat. Battle Orders should also include measures for when contacts are initially detected within the VA and CIEA.

Q

What is Tactical Picture Compilation

A

Tactical Picture Compilation. This asks the fundamental question of what is out there that the ship needs to know about. This involves observing the surrounding environment and gathering information about it. The tasks within this stage include detecting entities using any available active or passive sensing equipment, detecting electromagnetic emissions, tracking physical objects, and classifying detected objects.

Q

What is threat evaluation

A

Threat Evaluation. Once tracks have been established, this stage focuses on asking whether a track poses a threat to the ship or its mission. The assessment is facilitated using the Tactical Picture Compilation to gauge whether there are any valid threats to the mission or objectives. This involves adhering to doctrine and procedures, communicating and coordinating with other assets, considering current intelligence, and assessing the tactical situation.

Q

What is engagement

A

Engagement. Once it has been determined that threats exist, they need to be eliminated by the ship. Engagement is taking action to neutralise a threat. It is a process that renders the threat incapable of completing its mission. Neutralisation can be achieved either by destroying or damaging the threat entity using weapons (hard kill) or by deceiving the threat through decoys and/or ship manoeuvring (soft kill).
