Laws of chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
What is the law of definite proportions?
A
Compounds have a constant chemical composition by mass (CO2 will always have a 1:2 ratio of carbon to oxygen)
2
Q
What is the law of multiple proportions?
A
When two elements form a series of compounds, the ratio of the masses of the 2cd element that combine with 1 gram of the first element can always be reduced down to whole numbers. Example: CO and CO2, in CO, 1g of C = 1.33g of O, in CO2, 1g of C = 2.67g of O, 2.67/1.33 = 2 (Note here, 2 is 2/1, the ratio has to be whole, not the number)
