Language Production 2 Flashcards
Is word production discrete or continuous?
Has been discussed for many years and the results are controversial.
Seriality: the selected lemma activates it’s lexeme.
Continuous transmission: non selected lemmas also activate their lexeme
What is SOA?
Stimulus onset asynchrony
How is picture word interference studied?
By a picture of something with a text below. SOA
What does distractor effects over SOA show?
Word first then picture = semantic interference large (early SOA).
Picture first then word = semantic interference large ( late SOA).
Phonological effects large at 0 and large SOA, gone at early SOA.
Supports discreetness
What does evidence of phonological co-activation show?
The activation of the word forms of words you don’t want to say
What does picture picture interference experiments show?
If two pictures are phonological related are presented, phonological facilitation is observed, although the non-target pictures do mot need to be processed.
Suggest continuous spread of activation from conceptual level trough lexicon, down to the lexeme level
