What are gestures?
Cross cultural phenomenon. Temporally and semantically coordinated with speech.
What are best gesture?
Rhythmic movement of arm, finger, head, foot. Often linked to emphasis in speech or rhythm of speech.
What are emblems?
Culture specific conventionalized gestures with recognized meaning and fixed form.
What are deictic gestures?
Pouting gestures, to prevent or abstract referents.
What are representations gestures?
Some Visio-spatial relationship to what is being said but not conventional
What are iconic gestures?
A representations gestures but more specific visual representation of referential meaning
What are metaphorical gestures?
Gestures which represent abstract ideas.
Why do we produce representational gestures?
Gesture is a medium for communication and it helps the speaker formulate speech.
