Language learning and Atypical language Flashcards
What are 4 challenges language learning children face?
segmentation
word order rules
learning how to mark verbs
learning how to generalise appropriately
What is the challenge of segmentation?
infant has to learn words from a continuous stream of speech
have to use transitional probabilities to know where one word ends and next word begins
Flo et al findings on segmentation
infants are sensitive to language-general cues (like transitional probabilities) and sensitive to language-specific cues (like stress)
What is the challenge of word order rules?
English is a SVO word order (subject, verb, object)
English speaking children have general knowledge of SVO by 21 months
What is the challenge of learning how to mark verbs?
children learn to mark verbs for agreement and tense
e.g adding -ed to create past tense
What is the challenge of learning how generalise appropriately?
children learn rule such as adding -ed to make past tense
but over-generalise rule to irregular verbs such as ‘bringed’ instead of ‘brought’
What are the 2 types of Atypical language development?
Acquired and Developmental
What is acquired atypical language development?
caused through injury
childhood aphasia - caused by stroke, brain trauma, tumours
What is developmental atypical language development?
caused by a developmental delay
DLD (developmental language disorder and ASD
What is DLD?
typically diagnosed during preschool years (3 years)
associated with long term educational difficulties
show deficits in morpho- syntax
What is morpho-syntax?
when people struggle to change or mark words so they fit the sentence
Types of diagnostic tests for DLD?
sentence imitation
picture vocabulary
What is one non-verbal IQ measure for DLD?
Wechsler preschool and primary scale
DLD and verb marking errors
children with DLD make more verb marking errors than same age peers
Why do children need to learn other mark verbs?
for agreement and tense
