Categorise power into three concepts;
– Power (authority).
– Social groups.
– Personal (role in society) power.
Technology has provided the youth with a platform to seek power.
What are these aspects?
Influential – no authority, trying to gain power.
Assertions– opinion in fact.
Metaphors – reassuring audience/bonds between the speaker and the audience.
Instrumental – authoritative power. Power because a few they are.
Model verbs and declarative sentences.
What concept did Fairclough do?
“Synthetic Personalisation”.
– Capitalist society separate into dominant and dominate classes.
– Believes we should study language to recognise power to influence us.
What supports this?
The Bill Clinton Scandal.
He used, “synthetic personalisation”. January 20, 1993.
– Speech was ironic as he abused his instrumental power to influence an assistant, Monica Lewinsky.
What are Grice’s 4 conversational maxims?
Quality – not lying on purpose, and speaking with what you believe to be true.
Quantity – Not withdrawing information that is relevant to the conversation, also not bombarding the peer with information.
Relevance – only say things relevant to the conversation.
Manner– clear, concise and orderly. Prevent using overly complex words.
